Kyrgyzstan is strengthening its infrastructure capacity

Kyrgyzstan has found itself at the centre of several infrastructure initiatives currently being implemented in Central Asia. Against the backdrop of large-scale energy and transport projects in the region, the republic is considering the possibility of developing nuclear energy and is continuing to modernise its transport infrastructure, according to the EABR.

It has emerged that the technical specifications for a small nuclear power plant project have already been handed over to the Kyrgyz side. The project in question was developed by the Russian state corporation Rosatom. A final decision on the construction of a nuclear power plant in Kyrgyzstan has not yet been taken, but the matter is being considered in the context of ensuring the country’s long-term energy security.

Interest in new sources of power generation is linked to rising electricity consumption and the need to diversify the energy mix. In neighbouring Uzbekistan, construction has already begun on a nuclear power station costing up to $9.5 billion, which indicates a growing focus on nuclear energy in Central Asia.

Another important infrastructure project for Kyrgyzstan remains the construction of Jalal-Abad International Airport. The new aviation hub is set to improve transport links to the south of the country, expand passenger and freight transport, and strengthen Kyrgyzstan’s position in regional logistics.

Experts note that the development of transport and energy infrastructure is becoming one of the key drivers of the republic’s economic growth. Against the backdrop of the modernisation of transport corridors and energy systems across Eurasia, Kyrgyzstan is gradually emerging as an active participant in regional infrastructure initiatives.

Thus, the construction of a new airport and discussions on the prospects for nuclear energy could become important elements in the country’s long-term development and in enhancing its investment appeal.
