Kyrgyzstan to Ban Non-Recyclable Plastic and Focus on Ecotourism

From 2027, Kyrgyzstan plans to completely ban non-recyclable single-use plastic products. This was announced by Prime Minister Adylbek Kasymaliyev at the International Environmental Conference in the Altai Republic.

He emphasized that ecotourism is becoming an important direction for the country's sustainable development. In 2023, Kyrgyzstan received 8.9 million tourists, of whom more than 20% chose ecological routes. Currently, there are 96 specially protected natural areas in the country with a total area of over 2 million hectares.

The head of the Cabinet emphasized that Kyrgyzstan attaches particular importance to climate change and biodiversity issues. The country monitors glaciers, has adopted a carbon neutrality concept for 2050, and aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 44% with the support of international partners.

The head of the Cabinet also noted efforts to preserve the snow leopard as a national symbol. Its population in the country has exceeded 500 individuals. Kyrgyzstan is promoting the idea of creating transboundary ecological corridors and is conducting the “Zhashyl Muras” campaign to green the country — over 29 million trees have been planted in three years.
