Avalanches and snowfalls have blocked mountain roads in Kyrgyzstan. Road services are working around the clock

Today, December 10, difficult weather conditions led to the closure of a number of mountain roads in Kyrgyzstan. In the morning, an avalanche occurred on the Karakol-Enilchek highway in the Ak-Suu district of the Issyk-Kul region, blocking traffic in six places at once — on sections between the 76th, 81st, and 82nd kilometers.

Road repair company No. 11 is responsible for clearing the road, work is ongoing, and additional information will be provided later. A thunderstorm is forming at the Chon-Ashu Pass, located on the same highway.

At the same time, snowfall has complicated the situation on other key routes in the country. Heavy snowfall was recorded in the morning on the Dolon Pass on the Bishkek-Naryn-Torugart highway: in some places, the depth of snow drifts reaches one meter. Heavy truck traffic remains restricted, and a traffic jam has formed on the road.

On the To-Ashu section of the Bishkek-Osh highway, road services continue to clear and treat the road surface with inert materials. Restrictions on heavy transport, introduced yesterday afternoon, are planned to be lifted in the near future.

The Ministry of Transport and Communications reported that the companies Kyrgyzavtozol-Tushduk and Kyrgyzavtozol-Tunduk are working around the clock, treating the roads with a sand-salt mixture. Road companies in seven regions of the country are on full alert and are responding quickly to the situation.

The ministry urges drivers to:

  • avoid driving into oncoming traffic;
  • observe traffic rules;
  • use winter tires;
  • carry the necessary tools.
