For every 1 million KGS of GDP, Kyrgyzstan consumes 9,300 kWh of electricity

In 2024, every 1 million KGS of Kyrgyzstan’s GDP accounted for 9,300 kWh of electricity. In 2019, 23,100 kWh were required to generate the same volume of GDP — almost 2.5 times as much. These figures are provided by the National Statistical Committee.

This indicator is known as the electricity intensity of the economy. It shows how much electricity is consumed to produce goods and services worth 1 million KGS.

In 2020, the electricity intensity of GDP rose to 24,100 kWh, but then fell year on year:

• in 2021 — to 19,300 kWh;
• in 2022 — to 13,600;
• in 2023 to 10.4 thousand;
• in 2024 to 9.3 thousand kWh.

Over five years, the figure has fallen by almost 60 per cent, and by 10.6 per cent in the last year alone.

Industry has also begun to consume less electricity per unit of output value. In 2019, 23.6 thousand kWh were consumed per 1 million KGS of industrial output, whilst in 2024 the figure was 14.2 thousand. The reduction over five years amounted to almost 40 per cent, and over the past year to 18.9 per cent.

In agriculture, forestry and fisheries, electricity intensity fell by 28 per cent compared with 2019 – from 14.3 thousand to 10.3 thousand kWh per 1 million KGS of output. However, the figure has been rising again over the last two years. In 2022, it stood at 9.3 thousand kWh; in 2023, it was 9.6 thousand; and in 2024, it reached 10.3 thousand kWh.
