The loans are granted at an annual interest rate of 3 per cent, and the plan is to import up to 20,000 head of breeding livestock into the country.
On 4 September, Erlist Akunbekov, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, presented Zamir Aliyev, a farmer from the Aksy District, with a certificate entitling him to receive 40 head of Aberdeen-Angus cattle.
The event took place at the ‘Elita’ branch of Kyrgyz Agroholding OJSC. As part of the project, the first consignment of 300 head of Aberdeen-Angus breeding cattle has already been imported into Kyrgyzstan.
The scheme provides for the direct import of animals without intermediaries or middlemen. According to the project initiators’ calculations, this should reduce additional mark-ups and enable farmers to purchase breeding stock at a price close to cost, using preferential loans at 3 per cent interest.
The main objective of the programme is to increase the availability of high-quality breeding stock for farmers and to improve the genetic potential of Kyrgyzstan’s livestock sector.
In total, the authorities intend to import up to 20,000 head of breeding stock into the country. There are plans to expand the programme in the future: consideration is being given to importing not only beef breeds but also dairy breeds.
