This decline has continued for the second year running. In 2024, there were 770 people of non-working age per 1,000 people of working age, and in 2023, the figure was 769. Moreover, the current figure is even slightly lower than the 2022 level, when it stood at 762 people.
The difference between urban and rural areas is particularly striking. In towns, there are 655 children and elderly people per 1,000 people of working age, whilst in rural areas the figure is 841. Consequently, the demographic burden on the working-age population in rural areas is approximately one-third higher.
The highest demographic burden among the regions was recorded in the Batken Region – 897 people per 1,000 people of working age. This is followed by the Jalal-Abad Region with a figure of 869 and the Osh Region with 867.
At the other end of the scale is Bishkek. In the capital, there are 514 children and elderly people per 1,000 working-age residents. This is almost half the figure seen, for example, in the Batken Region.
At the same time, the ratio has fallen over the past year in most regions. The most significant decline was in Talas Region, from 845 to 824 people per thousand of the working-age population. In Jalal-Abad Region, the ratio fell from 882 to 869, and in Issyk-Kul Region, from 799 to 785.
In Bishkek, by contrast, the figure rose slightly – from 513 to 514 people.
Looking solely at the rural population, the highest burden also remains in the Batken Region – 923 people per thousand of the working-age population. In the Jalal-Abad Region, the figure stands at 882, and in the Osh Region – 872.
