08/03/2026, 16:34As part of the agreements reached between Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan on the demarcation of the state border, organisational and technical measures relating to the exchange of land parcels have begun.
In particular, in July this year, a regular meeting of the joint working commission of Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan took place in the Kadamjay district. The participants discussed organisational and technical issues relating to the exchange of territories, including determining the civil status of residents in the transferred settlements, their possible resettlement, and the resolution of property, economic and other matters.
To implement the decisions taken and to resolve organisational and technical issues promptly, a joint working group comprising representatives from both countries began its work on 3 August 2026.
The Kyrgyz side is led by Baktybek Toksonsbaev, First Deputy Plenipotentiary Representative of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic in the Batken Region, whilst the Uzbek side is led by Bekhzod Sayfullaev, Deputy Head of the Department of Migration and Personalisation at the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Uzbekistan.
As noted by the press office of the President’s Plenipotentiary Representative in the Batken Region, during the demarcation of the state border, the villages of Chon-Gara and Tash-Tobo, which previously belonged to the Fergana Region of Uzbekistan, were transferred to Kyrgyzstan. These settlements are predominantly inhabited by ethnic Kyrgyz.
According to preliminary data, around 2,500 people live in the two villages.
Residents are currently being registered in the settlements. In the next stage, in accordance with Kyrgyz legislation, the procedure for granting citizenship of the Kyrgyz Republic will be organised.
Under the agreement between Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, in exchange for these settlements, the Kyrgyz side will transfer to Uzbekistan a plot of land of equivalent value along the state border.
