Kyrgyzstan’s population has reached 7.41 million – more than half live in rural areas

As of 1 February 2026, Kyrgyzstan’s population stood at 7.41 million. More than half of the country’s inhabitants live in rural areas, according to the National Statistical Committee.

According to statistics, there are 3.67 million men and 3.75 million women in the country. The distribution of the population by settlement type shows that 3.14 million people live in towns and cities, whilst 4.28 million live in rural areas.

By region, the Osh region leads with 1.44 million inhabitants, followed by the Jalal-Abad region with 1.38 million and Bishkek with 1.36 million people. The Chui Region has a population of almost 985,000, the Batken Region 606,000, the Issyk-Kul Region 555,000, the city of Osh 486,000, the Naryn Region 316,500 and the Talas Region 283,000.
