A single day accounted for almost 83 per cent of the weekly turnover on the Kyrgyz interbank market

The volume of dollar trading on Kyrgyzstan’s interbank foreign exchange market between 5 and 9 October totalled $266.5 million. Almost 83 per cent of this amount was traded on Wednesday, 7 October, when market participants concluded deals worth $220.6 million. The main reason for the surge was a major foreign exchange intervention by the National Bank.

On that day, the regulator sold $207.55 million, carrying out its second-largest intervention since the start of the year. Of this amount, $27 million was settled on the day the transactions were concluded, whilst a further $180.55 million was settled on a different date.

The National Bank’s sales accounted for 94.1 per cent of the day’s turnover and 77.9 per cent of the week’s turnover. Excluding this intervention, the volume of transactions over the five days would have amounted to around $59 million. Thus, the scale of the week’s trading was largely determined by the regulator’s supply of foreign currency.

On the other days, volumes were significantly lower. On Monday, 5 October, turnover stood at $14.95 million; on Tuesday, it was $16.6 million. Following the intervention, it fell to $6.9 million on Thursday and $7.5 million on Friday.

The structure of the week’s trading was dominated by non-same-day settlement transactions, which accounted for $202.75 million, or 76.1 per cent of the total volume. Same-day settlement transactions totalled $63.775 million.

The market began the new week with an increase in turnover. On Monday, 12 October, the trading volume reached $12.65 million — 68.7 per cent more than on the previous Friday. Of this amount, $11.2 million was accounted for by transactions with settlement on other dates and $1.45 million by same-day settlement transactions.

Despite significant fluctuations in trading volume, the exchange rate remained unchanged at the opening and closing of trading at 87.45 KGS per dollar.
