Online loan fraud has fallen by 30% since the introduction of the 'cooling off period'

In 2024, 140 cases of online fraud were recorded in Kyrgyzstan, of which more than 60% are related to the issuance of loans in the name of citizens without their knowledge. This was reported by the Chairman of the National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic Melis Turgunbaev at a meeting of the Jogorku Kenesh Committee on Budget and Finance.

According to him, after the introduction of the so-called “cooling off period” - the time during which a borrower can refuse an online loan - the number of fraudulent cases has decreased by 30%.

"The National Bank is doing everything possible to prevent citizens from being deceived and minimize losses. We fully support the bill on the voluntary ban on loans, which was proposed by the deputies. This is another step towards strengthening the financial security of our citizens," Turgunbayev emphasized.

Earlier, the deputies proposed to introduce into the legislation a norm allowing citizens to voluntarily restrict the possibility of applying for a loan in their name - especially in the online mode.
