World Bank mission's field meeting under the “Development of the Kyrgyz Renewable Energy” project was held at Bystrovskaya HPP, owned by the OJSC “Chakan HPP”. Within the project, the World Bank allocates $4.6 mln to Chakan HPP for partial reconstruction of Bystrovskaya HPP, feasibility study development, preparation of tender documentation for design and technical supervision of construction. Also, $38.6 million has been provided for a small HPP construction on the Tar River in Osh Oblast.
The main objective of this mission is to review the progress of the implementation of all project components and support its further progress. The mission is headed by the Senior Energy Specialist and Project Manager, Mr. Federico Querio.
During the field meeting, experts assessed the current state and prospects for the Bystrovskaya HPP development. Since its commissioning in 1954, its capacity has been 8.7 megawatts and its average annual output has been 45 million kilowatt-hours. However, over the years, the equipment has been wearing out, resulting in a capacity decrease. The current technical state of the plant is assessed as satisfactory.
According to the preliminary feasibility study prepared by Norconsult company, the reconstruction of Bystrovskaya HPP will increase its efficiency and reliability by 16-18%. The modernization is expected to increase annual electricity generation by 7.2 million kilowatt-hours.
