Food security in Kyrgyzstan: which foodstuffs are produced in surplus

In January–June 2026, the supply of the nine key socially significant foodstuffs to the population of Kyrgyzstan improved compared with the same period last year.

This was noted at a meeting of the Council on Food Security and Nutrition, chaired by Erlist Akunbekov, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers.

According to the results for the first half of 2026:

  • potatoes – 198.9% (+22.3 percentage points);
  • vegetables and melons – 247.2 per cent (+136.8 percentage points);
  • milk and dairy products – 124.1 per cent (+2.8 percentage points);
  • meat – 82.1 per cent (+2.4 percentage points);
  • eggs – 79.8 per cent (+8.5 percentage points);
  • bakery products – 77.4 per cent (+16.5 percentage points);
  • sugar – 72.6 per cent;
  • vegetable oil – 53.6 per cent;
  • fruit and berries – 15.6 per cent.

In particular, for potatoes, vegetables and melons, as well as milk and dairy products, domestic production has reached a level sufficient to meet the population’s needs.

At the same time, for foodstuffs with low self-sufficiency levels, the main focus will be on increasing domestic production. To this end, measures will be implemented to increase the volume of wheat and oilseed cultivation, establish new orchards, provide high-quality seeds and breeding stock, improve the fodder base, expand irrigated areas and introduce modern technologies.

The main objective is to achieve 100 per cent domestic self-sufficiency in key socially significant food products by 2030 and to reduce dependence on imports.
