Road through Bedel: Kyrgyzstan and China discuss construction of a highway

Kyrgyzstan and China have started negotiations on the construction of a new strategic highway Barskoon-Uchturfan-Aksu. It will connect the Issyk-Kul region with the Chinese border through the Bedel checkpoint, which was opened in test mode in 2024.

In Beijing, Deputy Prime Minister Bakyt Torobaev held talks with major Chinese infrastructure corporations. They discussed details of the implementation of the project, which can significantly strengthen Kyrgyzstan's transit potential and create a new trade corridor between the two countries.

"This is not just a road, but a new path for exports, logistics and integration. We want Kyrgyzstan to become a full-fledged bridge between China and third countries," Torobayev noted.

Following the meeting, the sides agreed to have Chinese delegations visit Kyrgyzstan and form working groups to start design work.

The new road will be the third full-fledged route to China after Irkeshtam and Torugart. It will speed up the movement of goods, create jobs and strengthen the economy of Issyk-Kul and Naryn oblasts. Last year, trade turnover between the countries reached a record $23 billion - a figure that could grow even more with the opening of the new artery.
