Courts of the Kyrgyz Republic are obliged to observe gender equality: no more than 70 per cent of judges of the same sex

Kyrgyzstan has proposed changes to legislation concerning gender equality in the judiciary and government.  Currently, in local courts with 5 or more judges, the rule that no more than 70 per cent of judges can be of the same sex must be observed. However, in practice this rule is not always fulfilled in the regions, where judges often do not fulfil these requirements.

To solve this problem, it is proposed that the president of the Supreme Court should take gender equality into account when transferring judges between courts. That is, if there are more judges of the same sex in a court, the president will transfer judges in such a way that the proportion is respected.

In addition, it is proposed to introduce the requirement of gender equality in the formation of new members of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan. This will also ensure a more balanced representation of men and women in the government.

Such changes are aimed at improving the gender balance in important government structures.
