Yandex Taxi and WB Taxi may face a state-backed competitor

A new major player, involving the state and a foreign investor, may emerge in Kyrgyzstan’s taxi and ride-hailing market. These projects involve the creation of a national taxi ride-hailing platform, a fleet of electric vehicles and a network of charging stations.

As indicated by the framework agreements signed in Bishkek between OJSC ‘National Investment Fund of the Kyrgyz Republic’ and the Chinese company Shenzhen Wuyou Technology Co., Ltd., the initiatives include not only a digital platform for transport services but also a fully-fledged transport ecosystem centred on electric transport.

In effect, this is an attempt to create a vertically integrated model: from a ride-hailing app to a proprietary fleet of electric vehicles and a charging station infrastructure. This format could potentially become an alternative to existing aggregators, including Yandex, which currently holds a significant market share in the region, as well as services operating under the Wildberries brand in related digital sectors.

The authorities state that the project is aimed at developing a ‘green’ economy, the digitalisation of transport and attracting investment. The Chinese side, for its part, confirms its interest in long-term participation and the transfer of technology in the field of electric transport.

For now, the agreements are of a framework nature, but if the projects move into the implementation phase, the taxi market in Kyrgyzstan could face a new competitor backed by the state and infrastructure resources – a factor that typically changes the rules of the game more quickly than any price competition.
