04/08/2026, 15:32A major overhaul of the capital’s electricity networks has begun: by 2026, the plan is to construct and upgrade more than 20 kilometres of 10 kV cable lines.
The work is being carried out by the Bishkek Electricity Network Company. The project involves dismantling old lines, laying new insulated cables, installing fittings and conducting tests. The modernisation will affect Erkindik Boulevard, Sadyrbaev, Fere and Kollektivnaya streets, the residential areas of Aktilek and Asanbay, and microdistricts 7 and 10. The first 3 kilometres of lines have already been laid, including in the area of the State Residence.
The old cable networks were partly built in the 1970s and require upgrading. The reform of tariff policy and the modernisation of infrastructure are aimed at reducing technical losses, improving reliability and connecting new consumers.
The project is being implemented as part of preparations for the autumn-winter period of 2026–2027, with the support of the International Development Association and the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs. Previously, the quality of the electricity supply in a number of districts of the capital was limited by outdated networks, which caused power cuts and energy losses.
Last week, Bishkek City Council demanded that mobile network operators bury their communication cables underground. The Association of Telecommunications Operators stated that it is physically impossible to do this within a short timeframe and that the technical conditions for doing so do not exist underground.
