Chuyskaya Oblast will be able to store 4.5 million cubic metres of water for field irrigation

Chui Region. On 18 December, the Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Head of the Presidential Administration of the Kyrgyz Republic, Adylbek Kasymaliyev, took part in a ceremony to lay the foundation stone for the construction of a ten-day regulation reservoir on the Ak-Suu River in the Moskovsky District.

The head of the Cabinet noted that the President of Kyrgyzstan attaches particular importance to the development of the irrigation sector. According to him, annually from the republican budget, from 1 to 3 billion KGS are allocated for the development of irrigation infrastructure, whereas previously funding throughout the country did not exceed 200 million KGS.

As part of the current programmes, 10 of the 44 planned irrigation facilities have been completely reconstructed and put into operation. This has made it possible to irrigate 5,680 hectares of new land, increase water supply to 37,953 hectares and improve the reclamation status of 12,253 hectares.

According to the strategy for the rational use of water resources for 2024–2030, the country plans to build 106 daily and ten-day regulation basins with a total volume of 953.74 million cubic metres. In the Chui region, 27 basins with a capacity of 188.4 million cubic metres are planned to be built. To date, work has been completed on seven sites, two are under construction, and three more are in the design stage.

A new reservoir on the Ak-Suu River with a capacity of 4.5 million cubic metres will ensure a stable water supply to the irrigated lands of four aiyl aimaks. This will increase the water supply to 6,500 hectares of agricultural land.

According to the participants of the ceremony, the implementation of the project will create conditions for the growth of agricultural production, increase the income of farms and contribute to the socio-economic development of the region.

In total, 2,700 kilometres of irrigation canals and 4,263 hydraulic structures have already been restored across the republic. 142 pumping units have been repaired and replaced. To improve the efficiency of the irrigation system, 301 units of specialised equipment and service vehicles have been purchased.
