In Kyrgyzstan, a mountain peak 4,050 metres high is to be named ‘SCO Peak’

The President of Kyrgyzstan, Sadyr Zhaparov, has signed a decree granting the unnamed mountain peak in the ‘Ala-Archa’ State Nature Park the geographical name ‘Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Peak’.

The peak in question is 4,050 metres high and is situated in the Alamudun District of the Chui Region.

The decision was taken to mark the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, as well as the forthcoming meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the SCO member states, to be held in Kyrgyzstan in 2026.

According to the decree, the Cabinet of Ministers has been instructed to consider, in accordance with established procedure, the matter of naming the peak ‘Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Peak’.

Furthermore, the government has been instructed to draft the relevant bill within three months and submit it to the Jogorku Kenesh for consideration.

Thus, the final formalisation of the new geographical name must take place in accordance with the procedure laid down by law.
