Preparations are under way in the Osh, Chui and Issyk-Kul regions for the construction of water supply systems for 130 villages

Active preparations have begun in the Osh, Chui and Issyk-Kul regions for the construction of new drinking water supply and sanitation systems. The work is being carried out as part of the ‘Universal Access to Water Supply and Sanitation (Phase 1)’ programme.

The project aims to provide safe drinking water and modern wastewater services to residents of 130 villages. As a result, more than 450,000 people will gain access to clean water.
Regional staff from the Project Implementation Group of the Department for the Development of Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation are coordinating the preparatory work with local authorities and municipal enterprises in the districts where construction is planned.

As part of the water supply sector reform and in accordance with the project plans, specialised municipal enterprises – district-level drinking water supply and wastewater services providers – are being established in eight districts of the republic.

Meetings are also being held in the villages, attended by representatives of local authorities, members of the aiyl councils, municipal enterprises and social institutions. Residents are being informed about the project’s objectives, the construction timetable, the procedure for connecting households and the further development of the infrastructure.

In addition, specialists are inspecting existing water supply systems. During these site visits, the condition of the facilities is assessed, existing problems are identified and issues relating to the sustainable operation of the enterprises that will maintain the infrastructure are discussed.
