02/13/2026, 08:52The Kyrgyz authorities intend to accelerate the reform of higher education. This was announced by Deputy Prime Minister Edil Baysalov at a meeting of the collegium of the Ministry of Science, Higher Education, and Innovation of the Republic.
According to him, the creation of a new department was a conscious step by the country's leadership aimed at a profound modernization of the university system. The main task of the reform is to transform universities into centers for training personnel for the modern economy and a source of competitive knowledge.
Special attention was paid at the meeting to the implementation of the presidential decree on granting special status to a number of universities. As Baysalov noted, the results of its implementation have been mixed. Some universities have managed to take advantage of new opportunities for development, but a number of educational institutions continue to show low growth.
“The time for waiting is over,” he stressed, pointing to the need to move from formal implementation of decisions to systemic changes.
In the coming weeks, the presidential administration, together with the relevant ministry, will strengthen the coordination of reforms. These include revising educational programs, reducing outdated disciplines, optimizing low-demand and ineffective areas, and launching new courses focused on the needs of the labor market, the digital economy, and the technology sector.
The implementation of the tasks set within the framework of higher education reform will be subject to special control.
