Over five years in Kyrgyzstan, material damage from emergencies exceeded 8 billion KGS

From 2020 to 2024, 308 emergencies of various kinds were recorded in Kyrgyzstan. This is evidenced by data from the Ministry of Emergency Situations.

Over a five-year period, 418 people died as a result of emergencies. The total material damage exceeded 8.4 billion KGS.

An analysis of the five-year period shows that the greatest economic losses are traditionally incurred in the southern regions of the republic, where high population density is combined with increased vulnerability to natural hazards.

The Batken region remains the leader in terms of the scale of damage. In some years, direct economic losses from emergencies reached double-digit percentages of the national gross domestic product. Thus, in 2021, economic damage from disasters in the region amounted to 6.2% of GDP, and in 2022 it reached 11.24%. During these years, armed conflicts were recorded on the border with Tajikistan.

In the Osh region, the highest economic damage was recorded in 2015, at 4.3% of GDP. This year coincides with a strong earthquake that occurred in the region in November. At that time, it led to the destruction of dozens of social facilities.

For comparison, in other regions during the observed period, since 2015, the indicator did not exceed 1%, and for Bishkek, the maximum recorded was 0.37% in 2018.
