$6.3 billion in losses and $3 billion in frozen assets: What Happened to Binance

The cryptocurrency exchange Binance has estimated the losses from the security incident at approximately $6.3 billion. According to preliminary investigation findings, the cause may have been a hack of a DevOps engineer’s laptop, through which attackers gained access to a service container and withdrew funds.

The company reported that it has so far managed to freeze approximately $3 billion in affected assets with the help of its blockchain partners. However, no signs of a wallet private key leak have been detected yet.

Binance stated that it will cover all losses using the SAFU fund and its own funds. The company also assured users that their funds are safe.

As a security measure, the exchange has temporarily suspended deposit and withdrawal operations, revoked authorization to use the affected address, and enlisted law enforcement and blockchain analysts to track down and recover the assets.

Once the investigation is complete, Binance promises to publish a detailed technical report and an updated reserve verification.

As a reminder, the initial investigation is ongoing. The company has not yet disclosed the definitive causes of the incident or the details of the unauthorized transactions.
