Poverty affects both the urban and rural populations of Kyrgyzstan, but it is most severe among residents of the regions.
In 2024, an overall decline in the poverty rate was recorded across the country. The situation affects all regions of Kyrgyzstan, but the main concentration of the poor population remains in rural areas.
The data covers the period from 2010 to 2024, with the latest figures relating to the final year of observation.
The decline in poverty levels is linked to rising incomes in urban areas and gradual changes in the economy; however, regional development remains uneven. The improvement in indicators is due to a reduction in extreme poverty and a gradual increase in the incomes of part of the population, but structural differences between urban and rural areas persist.
Despite the positive trend, the gap between urban and rural areas remains significant. In 2024, around 62% of all people living in poverty resided in rural settlements.
In 2010, the poverty rate stood at 33.7%, and a general decline has been observed since then. However, fluctuations were recorded in certain years (for example, in 2022).
