A centralised register of trees with ‘passports’ is being created in Bishkek – what will this mean for city residents

A unified register of green spaces is being created in Bishkek, into which all the capital’s trees are to be included. The initiative has already received public support and is being implemented on the instructions of Mayor Aibek Junushaliyev.

At a meeting of the Environmental Council, a decision was taken to create an electronic database of green spaces. The municipal enterprise “Centre for Digital Technologies” is developing digital maps so that residents can access information about every tree in the city in the future.

In parallel, the municipal enterprise ‘Bishkekzelenstroy’, in collaboration with relevant departments, has already begun work on an inventory of trees in the capital’s parks and squares. Each tree is assigned an individual tag – a sort of ‘passport’ – recording its species, age, trunk diameter, height and current condition.

This system will enable the monitoring of the condition of green spaces, the timely planning of maintenance, the identification of diseased and hazardous trees, and the effective management of urban greening.

The authorities emphasise that the work is aimed at preserving and developing the city’s green spaces. At the same time, the information being circulated about alleged mass felling of trees on Erkindik Boulevard is untrue.
