BRICS could support the free movement of goods and capital

BRICS is capable of playing an important role in maintaining the free movement of goods and capital, as well as serving as a platform for exploring new economic opportunities. This was stated by Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Sihasak Phuangkettkeo, in an interview with TV BRICS.

According to him, meetings within the framework of the group are primarily devoted to the development of trade and investment. Whilst the state creates the conditions for cooperation, the private sector remains the main driving force.

Thailand was granted BRICS partner country status in 2025 and expects to become a full member of the group in 2026. In Bangkok, the group is viewed as a platform for establishing new business and scientific ties, as well as for expanding cooperation with countries of the Global South.

Phuangketkeo paid particular attention to ASEAN’s economic integration. In his view, deepening cooperation within the bloc will create additional opportunities for trade and for attracting foreign investment to South-East Asia.

Another growth driver is expected to be the India–Myanmar–Thailand trilateral motorway. The project has been under discussion for almost two decades, but its completion has been hampered by the internal situation in Myanmar.

Once launched, the route could become an important corridor for trade, investment and the movement of people, linking the economies of South and South-East Asia. The project takes on particular significance against the backdrop of India’s growing economic role, noted Thailand’s Foreign Minister.

The next BRICS summit will take place in New Delhi on 12–13 September. Thailand will be represented at the meeting by the country’s Prime Minister.
