The number of Kyrgyz citizens taking out loans has increased by 1.5 times. Why is this a problem?

Compared to 2024, the number of borrowers has increased by 1.5 times, whilst the volume of microloans issued has risen by almost 32% – to 86 billion KGS.

According to the National Statistics Committee, 1,685,600 people received loans. The majority of borrowers are residents of Bishkek and the southern regions.

The breakdown of how the funds are used shows that around 62% of microloans are directed towards consumer purposes — effectively for the purchase of goods.

The growing popularity of microloans may indicate a shortage of current income among the population. In such circumstances, borrowed funds are more often used to cover expenses rather than for development, which increases the debt burden and heightens the financial vulnerability of households.

At the same time, agriculture accounted for around 15% of the funds disbursed, whilst trade and catering accounted for over 10%.
