The case of Sapar Isakov has been sent back for retrial

The Supreme Court of the Kyrgyz Republic has granted the request of the Prosecutor General's Office and lawyer Sapar Isakov to reopen a criminal case based on newly discovered circumstances. The relevant ruling was issued on 29 April 2025.

The case concerns former Prime Minister Sapar Isakov, who was previously convicted in several high-profile cases, including the reconstruction of the Bishkek Thermal Power Plant. The Supreme Court overturned all previous decisions in the Isakov case:

    • the verdict of the Sverdlovsk District Court of 6 December 2019,
    • the appeal ruling of the Bishkek City Court of 23 March 2020,
    • and the Supreme Court rulings of 22 June 2020 and 2 March 2021.

The criminal case has been referred back to the Sverdlovsky District Court of Bishkek for a new trial, but with a different panel of judges.
