12/02/2025, 15:48Work continues in Bishkek on a new master plan for the capital's development until 2050. According to the mayor's office, the project is based on a concept for the city's development developed by Nikken Sekkei, a Japanese architecture and urban planning company and one of the world leaders in urban planning.
Work with Japanese specialists began back in May 2024. Nikken Sekkei prepared a comprehensive concept for the development of Bishkek, including spatial growth scenarios, a transport model, an assessment of building density, the distribution of functional zones, and recommendations for the sustainable development of the city. This concept became the basis for the current Master Plan project, which is being developed jointly with the Research Institute for Advanced Urban Planning in St. Petersburg.
“When creating the Master Plan, data on demographic trends, the state of urban infrastructure, and economic indicators were collected and analyzed, and a study of traffic flows was conducted on 27 key sections of the street and road network,” said the capital's mayor, Aibek Junushaliyev.
The draft Master Plan was published for public discussion, and to date, the mayor's office has received over 200 official proposals and comments. Taking into account the appeals on all platforms, their number exceeds 3,000, and more than 10,000 people took part in surveys on the quality of the urban environment. This indicates the high level of interest among citizens in the future of the capital.
“The final version of the document will take into account both the strategic recommendations of Japanese experts and the opinions of residents. The draft is planned to be submitted for discussion by the cabinet of ministers,” the mayor emphasized.
The master plan for 2050 should define the long-term development vector for Bishkek, including the modernization of the transport system, the expansion of green areas, the increase in the density and quality of urban development, and the optimization of engineering infrastructure.
