Kyrgyzstan's national debt exceeds $8.3 billion

At the end of June, Kyrgyzstan's total public debt, external and internal, amounted to $8.38 billion or 732.7 billion KGS. These figures are given in the draft republican budget for 2026, prepared by the Ministry of Finance.

The national debt consisted of external liabilities, which amounted to $5.24 billion, estimated at 62.5% of the total, and domestic borrowings — $3.14 billion, or 37.5%.

It is specified that external obligations consist of more than 300 loans, 99% of which are provided on preferential terms. Interest rates range from 0.1% to 2% per annum, and maturities reach 50 years. Most loans have fixed interest rates, with the exception of loans from the EBRD, AIIB and Denmark.

The five main creditors account for over 70% of the external debt portfolio:

  • China;
  • International Development Association;
  • Asian Development Bank;
  • International Monetary Fund;
  • Eurasian Stabilisation and Development Fund.

In addition, the Islamic Development Bank accounts for 3.8% of external debt, and Japan for 2.8%.

It should be added that the Ministry of Finance's data on public debt is published irregularly. Currently, detailed information is publicly available for the end of April, when the total debt was estimated at $6.86 billion, of which $4.5 billion was external debt. This means that in just one month, the figure increased by $1.52 billion, with both external and internal borrowing by the republic contributing almost equally to this increase.
