Wheat imports into Kyrgyzstan have surged 17-fold — Russia has taken over the market

In January–February 2026, Kyrgyzstan saw a sharp increase in wheat imports — volumes rose 17-fold, with Russia accounting for almost the entire market.

In January–February 2026, Kyrgyzstan sharply increased its wheat imports: the total volume of supplies reached 703,400 tonnes, compared with 41,500 tonnes for the same period last year.

Russia accounted for the bulk of the growth, supplying 670,500 tonnes, whilst imports from Kazakhstan fell to 32,900 tonnes. The reasons for such a sharp change in the supply structure have not been officially disclosed, but virtually the entire increase was due to Russian supplies.

Total imports amounted to 703,400 tonnes, compared to 41,500 tonnes a year earlier.

Of this, 670,500 tonnes came from Russia, whilst supplies from Kazakhstan amounted to just 32,900 tonnes.

A year ago, the situation was the reverse: Kazakhstan was the main supplier of wheat to Kyrgyzstan (around 70%), whilst Russia accounted for a smaller share. Now, the market structure has changed almost entirely.
