10/08/2025, 08:49Mortality in Kyrgyzstan is declining, but the causes of death remain almost unchanged. In 2024, 31,700 deaths were recorded in the country, 20% less than four years ago. At the same time, half of all lives are lost to heart and vascular diseases.
Circulatory system diseases account for 16,600 deaths, or every second death in the country. The vast majority of those who died were people over working age, but even among working citizens, heart problems remain a frequent cause of death. More than a third of deaths in this group are cardiovascular.
Cancer consistently ranks second. In 2024, 13.7% of all Kyrgyzstanis who died died of cancer. This is not a unique situation — other CIS countries have similar figures. However, this indicator has remained high for years, despite advances in medicine.
For people of working age, the vast majority of deaths are due to external causes — traffic accidents, injuries, poisoning. In 2024, 2,100 people died in this way, three-quarters of them young people.
Another 2,000 deaths were related to lung disease.
Tuberculosis. It would seem that it is more often discussed in a historical context, but it remains a significant risk factor. In 2024, the disease was the cause of almost half of all deaths from infectious diseases. It is alarming that 70% of those who died from tuberculosis were people of working age.
