Kyrgyzstan presented initiatives on the sustainable development of mountain regions in Vienna

Kyrgyzstan continues to promote the international agenda on the sustainable development of mountain regions and is preparing for the Second Global Mountain Summit, which will take place in Bishkek in October 2027.

A round-table discussion was held at the Vienna International Centre, organised by the Embassy of Kyrgyzstan in Austria in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), focusing on advancing the international mountain agenda, developing partnerships and the role of the United Nations in the sustainable development of mountain regions.

The event was attended by Dinara Kemelova, the President of Kyrgyzstan’s Special Representative for the implementation of the Five-Year Action Plan for the Development of Mountain Regions. Opening remarks were delivered by Nurzhan Shaildabekova, Kyrgyzstan’s Permanent Representative to the OSCE, the UN and other international organisations in Vienna, and Matthias Jurek, Head of UNEP’s Mountain Issues Group.

Representatives from Austria, Kazakhstan, UNIDO, the IAEA, the OSCE and Andorra, as well as diplomats from 27 countries, took part in the round-table discussion. Participants discussed strengthening multilateral cooperation and implementing joint initiatives in the field of sustainable development of mountain areas.

As noted by the organisers, the round-table discussion formed part of the preparations for the Second Global Mountain Summit, which Kyrgyzstan will host in 2027.

During her visit to Vienna, Dinara Kemelova also held meetings with the President of the Austrian National Council, Walter Rosenkranz; the Secretary General of the OSCE, Feridun Sinirlioğlu; and representatives of the Austrian federal authorities and international organisations.

The Kyrgyz side presented key initiatives on the sustainable development of mountain regions and invited international partners to take part in the preparation and hosting of the summit in Bishkek.

Following the meetings, representatives from Austria and international organisations expressed their interest in further cooperation with Kyrgyzstan in the field of protecting mountain ecosystems, implementing joint projects and exchanging expertise.
