Kyrgyz citizens have already snapped up 60 per cent of the ‘people’s’ bond issue

According to the Kyrgyz Stock Exchange, Kyrgyz citizens purchased government bonds for private individuals worth 300 million KGS over the course of a month. This means that citizens have already bought up 60 per cent of the pilot issue.

The Ministry of Finance first issued these bonds in June 2026, directly inviting the public to lend money to the state. The bonds have a maturity of two years and offer a yield of 17 per cent per annum. The total issue size is 500 million KGS.

By way of comparison, two-year government bonds traded on the Kyrgyz Stock Exchange’s regular market have a yield of around 13 per cent. The higher rate is intended to attract Kyrgyz citizens, who are accustomed to keeping their savings in bank deposits.

On the first day of sales, 70 people bought bonds worth 2.2 million KGS. However, demand then picked up significantly, and within a month the total investment had risen to 300 million KGS. The Ministry of Finance is now preparing to issue a fourth tranche worth a further 100 million KGS.

The minimum investment threshold is low: the face value of a single bond is 100 KGS, and investors can start with as little as 1,000 KGS. The bonds can be purchased via the MegaPay app.

Interest is paid every three months. The government is required to repay the principal to bondholders at the end of the two-year term.

Previously, ‘Akchabar’ reported in detail on the growth of Kyrgyzstan’s domestic debt, which rose by 120 billion KGS between January and July 2026.

However, until now, the main buyers of government securities have been banks and large investors. The new issue effectively opens up this market to the general public.
