Kyrgyzstan invests in smart energy and future talent

2026 will be a turning point for Kyrgyzstan's energy sector, as the country actively transitions to digital technologies and renewable energy sources. The Ministry of Energy, with the support of the World Bank and JICA, is launching projects that will not only upgrade the grid but also create new opportunities for industry and tourism.

In the south of the country, a 220-kilowatt substation (2x200 MVA) is being built in the Osh region, which will allow for the integration of new renewable energy capacities and reduce the region's dependence on old power lines. At the same time, large-scale digitalization is being implemented: smart meters are being introduced, transformers and power grid equipment are being upgraded, and SCADA automated control systems are being launched, which will give the power system a high level of control and predictability.

Special attention is being paid to training personnel. A new-generation training center based on the ZEB concept is being built at JICA, with a solar power plant, energy storage systems, and modern relay protection simulators. This will enable graduates to be ready to work at the highest international standards and provide the country with qualified specialists for further technological progress.

These projects are aimed at reducing technical losses, expanding the possibilities for connecting new facilities, and creating a reliable, “smart” energy system.
