10/03/2025, 10:44In 2024, Kyrgyzstan's energy sector increased its production volumes. Enterprises generated 6.5% more electricity than a year earlier — 14.7 billion kWh. Even so, this is 3.7 billion kWh less than the country needs.
The growth in production did not meet the needs of the economy and the population. According to official data, in 2024, total consumption amounted to 18.4 billion kWh, which is almost 3.7 billion kWh more than was produced domestically. The difference had to be compensated for by imports. The volume of electricity received from outside the republic increased by 10%, reaching 3.84 billion kWh.
Thus, Kyrgyzstan remains a country where electricity consumption consistently exceeds production. This is despite the fact that, according to the Ministry of Energy, eight small hydroelectric power plants with a total capacity of 48.84 MW were commissioned in the republic last year. This year, it is planned to launch another 18 small HPPs with a capacity of 80.4 MW.
