The Ministry of Energy and the World Bank discussed a new phase of cooperation

Altynbek Rysbekov, Minister of Energy of the Kyrgyz Republic, held a meeting with Hugh Riddell, Head of the World Bank’s Office in Kyrgyzstan, and experts from the organisation. The parties discussed the current status of joint projects and further areas of cooperation in the energy sector.

At the start of the meeting, Hugh Riddell congratulated the Minister on his appointment and noted his many years of experience in the sector, emphasising continuity in the implementation of energy reforms.

Particular attention was paid to personnel changes within the World Bank’s KEMS and REMIT projects. The new project manager, Kabir Malik, was introduced. Former coordinator Maksuzhon Safarov was thanked for his work.

The launch of the first phase of the solar power plant project, with a total capacity of 1,900 MW, which came into operation on 14 June, was also discussed. The World Bank noted that the project was a significant outcome of energy reforms and coincided with the new minister taking office.

Hugh Riddell emphasised that in recent months the implementation of joint initiatives had accelerated and reached a higher level of efficiency.

“Recently, there has been very good momentum in project implementation. Compared to the situation a few months ago, the difference is very significant,” he noted.

Minister Altynbek Rysbekov, in turn, stated that the World Bank remains a key partner for Kyrgyzstan in the energy sector, and that current projects are aimed at strengthening energy security, digitising management and modernising infrastructure.

Following the meeting, the parties confirmed their intention to continue deepening cooperation and accelerating the implementation of investment projects in Kyrgyzstan’s energy sector.
