A six-month ban on the import of chicken eggs will be introduced in Kyrgyzstan from 1 May

The Ministry of Water Resources, Agriculture and Processing Industry of the Kyrgyz Republic will introduce a six-month ban on the import of chicken eggs from 1 May 2025.

The only exceptions are transit deliveries and the movement of eggs between EAEU countries through the territory of Kyrgyzstan. The measure was taken to ensure food security and stabilise market prices, in accordance with the ministry's regulations and the recommendation of the Food Security and Nutrition Council of 14 April.

According to the ministry, no imported eggs have entered the country from neighbouring states since 10 February. At the same time, in January–March 2025, 8,812,800 eggs were exported from Kyrgyzstan to Kazakhstan, which is 8.7 million more than in the same period in 2024. At the same time, imports fell by more than 10 million eggs.

The growth in domestic production and increased competition between large and small poultry farms also had an impact on the situation. In rural areas, most families keep 30–40 chickens, which further increases the volume of local eggs and reduces the need for imports.
Against this backdrop, the ministry recommends that farmers focus on chicken meat production, which remains more profitable. According to annual data, more than 91,000 tonnes of chicken meat are imported into the country, and demand for meat remains high.

At the same time, the ministry emphasises that it is not restricting the free movement of products within the country. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture Bakyt Torobaev provided more details on the situation with eggs and the reasons for the temporary ban.
