01/06/2025, 17:35Late last year, OpenAI launched ChatGPT Pro, a $200-per-month plan. Expectations for the popularity of this product were exceeded, which led to financial losses for the company. This was reported by TechCrunch.
The CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, admitted that the active use of subscriptions by users far exceeds revenues, leading to increased costs for the company. Altman noted on Platform X that he set the price with the expectation of a small profit margin.
The ChatGPT Pro tariff gives unlimited access to all of OpenAI's models, including the advanced o1 Pro model, which features advanced logic abilities and the ability to solve complex problems. Users also get access to Advanced Voice Mode, which provides the most natural interaction possible. In comparison, ChatGPT Plus users have daily limits on these features, and the free version offers only limited capabilities.
Despite the product's success, OpenAI continues to operate at a loss. It is predicted that in 2024, the company's losses could be around $5bn on revenue of $3.7bn, with the main costs related to employee salaries, office rent and infrastructure for AI training. At one point, just supporting ChatGPT was costing OpenAI $700k daily.
This situation is causing concern among investors who have invested about $20bn in the company. The profitability of the business model remains an open question, despite the high interest in the product.
