State Department head Marco Rubio has directed that the agency's functions be transferred directly to the State Department. The decision will affect hundreds of employees in more than 100 countries. As early as June 15, the department will begin managing aid programs previously overseen by USAID.
However, the reform could be put on hold. A court has already temporarily blocked the mass layoff decree, and experts warn of dire humanitarian consequences, from increased malaria deaths to millions of children left untreated.
