06/19/2026, 17:45On 19 June, the sixth Meeting of Energy Ministers of the Member States of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation took place in Bishkek, chaired by Kyrgyzstan.
Opening the meeting, Kyrgyzstan’s Minister of Energy, Altynbek Rysbekov, noted that hosting an event of this calibre was a significant milestone for the country’s energy sector. He said that, over the 25 years of the SCO’s existence, energy cooperation had become one of the key areas of collaboration between member states.
During the meeting, the parties discussed issues relating to energy security, infrastructure modernisation, attracting investment, the introduction of digital technologies and improving energy efficiency.
Kyrgyzstan reaffirmed its support for the development of cross-border energy infrastructure and the expansion of interconnectivity between national power systems. The importance of the republic’s hydropower potential for ensuring the region’s energy sustainability was also highlighted.
Furthermore, the Kyrgyz side put forward an initiative to establish a Regional Centre for the Implementation of Energy-Efficient and Resource-Saving Technologies in Bishkek. It is envisaged that the centre will serve as a platform for the exchange of expertise, the training of specialists and the implementation of modern solutions in the energy sector.
Following the meeting, the participants approved statements on energy conservation, energy efficiency and the development of the integration of the SCO countries’ energy systems.
