This was announced on August 6 during a visit by President Sadyr Zhaparov to Cholpon-Ata, where the project “Environmental Management of Lake Issyk-Kul and Sustainable Tourism Development” is being implemented.
The project provides for the construction of sewerage networks that will connect Bostry, Baktuu-Dolonotu, Cholpon-Ata, and Kara-Oi. A modern sewage treatment plant with a capacity of 14,200 cubic meters per day and 12 pumping stations, two of which have already begun construction, will also be built.
In addition to the environment, the project aims to improve the tourist infrastructure: plans include the improvement of the A. Osmonov Park, the reconstruction of the Saimaluu Tash museum complex and the city museum, as well as the construction of two promenades with bike paths and running tracks along the shore.
The total cost of the project is $64.9 million. Funding is provided by the Asian Development Bank: $31 million in grants, $25 million in loans, and another $8.9 million from Kyrgyzstan. In June 2025, contracts were signed with the Chinese company China Road and the Turkish company Alkatas for the construction of treatment facilities, pumping stations, and the laying of nearly 6 km of sewer collectors.
The work is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2027. Sadyr Zhaparov stressed that the project is important for preserving the unique ecosystem of Issyk-Kul and attracting tourists, and instructed that the quality and timing of construction be strictly monitored.
