$1.25 billion was transferred to Kyrgyzstan from abroad — $120 million less than a year ago

Between January and May this year, Kyrgyzstan received $1 billion 247.4 million via remittance systems. This is $119.8 million, or 8.8 per cent, less than during the same period last year.

In the first five months of 2025, the total value of remittances received by the country amounted to $1 billion 367.2 million.

Russia remains the main source of remittances. In January–May, $1.1 billion was received from there — 88.3 per cent of the total. Over the year, this figure fell by $180.9 million, or 14.1 per cent. In the corresponding period of 2025, almost $1.3 billion was transferred from Russia.

At the same time, remittances from countries outside the former Soviet bloc rose significantly – from $67.9 million to $105.8 million, an increase of 55.8 per cent. Remittances from the US increased particularly sharply, from $27.6 million to $68.7 million – almost 2.5 times as much. Remittances from Turkey totalled $4.5 million, compared with $4 million a year earlier.

In May alone, $287.9 million was remitted to Kyrgyzstan. This is the highest monthly figure since the start of 2026, though it remains 3.8 per cent below the level recorded in May last year, when $299.2 million was received.

The decline in the total volume of remittances comes against a backdrop of continued interest among Kyrgyz citizens in working abroad. Since the start of 2026, according to the Ministry of Labour, 10,800 Kyrgyz citizens have found employment abroad with the assistance of private employment agencies.

Turkey has become the main destination. Other popular destinations include the United Kingdom, Bulgaria and Germany.
