A new breed – the Kyrgyz White Yak – has been officially registered in Kyrgyzstan

A new breed of farm animal – the Kyrgyz White Yak – has been officially registered in Kyrgyzstan. The relevant order was signed by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture and Processing Industry, Erlist Akunbekov.

This historic event for the country’s livestock sector took place on 20 July at the high-altitude Syrt pasture in the Issyk-Kul region. According to the minister, the state registration of the new breed will be an important step towards the development of pedigree livestock farming, the conservation of national genetic resources and the strengthening of the export potential of the country’s agro-industrial complex.

The new breed was developed as a result of breeding work carried out between 2014 and 2026. A significant contribution to its creation was made by Hero of Socialist Labour and breeder Tashtanbek Akmatov, who spent many years breeding white yaks. Scientists, specialists, breeding farms and livestock farmers also participated in the development of the breed.

According to the results of scientific research, the Kyrgyz white yak is characterised by high productivity, good live weight, reproduction and survival rates among young stock, as well as a high level of adaptation to high-altitude conditions.

Another distinctive feature of the new breed is its white wool and high-quality down, which can be used as a valuable raw material for the textile industry. The Ministry of Agriculture believes that the registration of the breed will create additional opportunities for the development of pedigree livestock farming, the economies of high-altitude regions and the expansion of the export potential of the domestic agri-industrial complex.
