In Kyrgyzstan, the area under rye cultivation has fallen by almost six times — the crop was harvested in just one region

In 2025, 87 hectares of rye were harvested in Kyrgyzstan, yielding 264 tonnes. By comparison, the previous year’s harvested area was 519 hectares, with a gross yield of 1,500 tonnes.

According to statistics from the National Statistics Committee, in 2025 the country’s rye harvest was gathered only in the Chui Region. There, 87 hectares of crops were harvested, with a yield of 30.4 centners per hectare and a total harvest of 264 tonnes.

In 2024, rye was also grown in the Issyk-Kul Region – 4 hectares with a yield of 37.3 centners per hectare. The bulk of the crops was in the Chui Region – 515 hectares, where 1,536 tonnes of rye were harvested.

Rye is one of the traditional cereal crops; however, in Kyrgyzstan, its production accounts for a small share compared with wheat and barley. In recent years, farmers have increasingly opted for crops with higher demand and profitability.
