Kyrgyzstan has begun monitoring temperature inversions that affect air pollution for the first time

Kyrgyzstan has become the first country in Central Asia to begin monitoring temperature inversions that affect air pollution.

New equipment is being introduced in Kyrgyzstan to identify specific weather conditions that affect atmospheric air pollution.

As part of the ‘Improving Air Quality in the Kyrgyz Republic’ project, implemented with the support of the World Bank, the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision has handed over state-of-the-art MTR-5 meteorological equipment to Kyrgyzhydromet.

The equipment enables the measurement of air temperature at altitudes of up to 1,000 metres and the detection of temperature inversions.

What is a temperature inversion? Put simply, it is a weather phenomenon in which air movement in the surface layer slows down. As a result, smoke, dust and other pollutants do not disperse upwards but accumulate over the city. This can lead to a deterioration in air quality.

With the help of the new equipment, specialists will be able to regularly monitor such phenomena and more accurately determine the impact of weather conditions on air pollution levels.

The data obtained will enable a detailed analysis of the causes behind increases or decreases in pollution levels and allow for more informed decisions to be made to improve air quality.
This is the first time such a temperature inversion monitoring system has been introduced in Kyrgyzstan.
