Only five counterfeit banknotes detected in Kyrgyzstan in one year

In 2024, the level of counterfeiting in Kyrgyzstan remained one of the lowest in the region, with only 0.01 counterfeit banknotes per million genuine banknotes.

These figures were provided by the National Bank, which noted that this was achieved thanks to the timely updating of security features and close cooperation with law enforcement agencies. At the end of the year, only five cases of counterfeiting were recorded, amounting to 18,000 KGS.

For comparison, in 2023, there were four times as many such banknotes — 22 notes worth 37,500 KGS. Criminal cases have been opened and operational measures have been taken in each case.

This progress was made possible by the release of a new, fifth series of soms, which began in May 2023. The updated banknotes, with denominations ranging from 20 to 5,000 KGS, have already entered circulation. They are equipped with a three-level security system, including markings for the visually impaired, an improved color palette, and elements that can be recognized by ATMs and sorting equipment.

In particular, the fifth series of banknotes in denominations of 20, 50, and 100 KGS were put into circulation on February 15, 2024, and the 5,000-KGS banknote on May 10, 2024.

At the same time, a high-speed counting and sorting system was put into commercial operation last year, which has made it possible to optimize cash verification.

In addition, a mobile application called “Kyrgyz Som” has been launched for the general public, which provides interactive instructions on how to check the authenticity of banknotes by tilting them, holding them up to the light, or using a magnifying glass.
