Owners of cars with foreign number plates have been given a final chance to legalise their vehicles

The President of the Kyrgyz Republic, Sadyr Japarov, has signed a decree bringing the process of legalising cars with foreign number plates to a close. Owners of such vehicles will be able to complete an additional legalisation procedure by 1 September 2026.

According to the decree, owners of vehicles that have not previously been legalised are granted the right to register the vehicle, export it outside Kyrgyzstan, sell it for spare parts, or scrap it. However, only vehicles imported into the country before 31 December 2024 and not yet registered with the state are subject to legalisation.

After 1 September 2026, legalisation will be definitively discontinued, and the operation of unregistered vehicles will be prohibited. If owners fail to comply with the requirements of the decree, the vehicles may be placed in specialised car parks for subsequent scrapping by court order. The Ministry of the Interior has also been instructed to set a preferential storage rate for such vehicles of 50 KGS per day.
