Water supply and sewerage: how access to basic infrastructure is growing in Kyrgyzstan

According to data from the National Statistical Committee of the Kyrgyz Republic, the country is seeing steady growth in the provision of basic utility services to households, particularly water supply, hot water supply and sewerage.

The proportion of the population living in homes with water supply has increased in both urban and rural areas. In urban settlements, the figure rose from 64.3% in 2019 to 80.8% in 2024. In rural areas, the trend is also positive: from 13.1% to 40.2% over the same period.

Access to hot water supply is also expanding. In towns, the proportion of such households increased from 34.2% in 2019 to 59.4% in 2024. In rural areas, the figure stood at 24.4% in 2024.

Growth is also evident in sewerage infrastructure. Nationwide, the proportion of the population with reliable access to sewerage increased from 31.5% in 2018 to 57.7% in 2024. The highest level was recorded in Bishkek, where 99% of the population has access to the sewerage system.

Overall, the statistics demonstrate a gradual expansion of basic infrastructure, although the gap between urban and rural areas remains.
