EDB and ORTA ASYA to invest over $6 billion in the construction of a hydroelectric power plant on the Suusamyr River

The Eurasian Development Bank and ORTA ASYA Investment Holding have announced the launch of a strategic partnership to implement major hydropower projects in Kyrgyzstan. The agreement provides for joint preparation of a feasibility study for the construction of the Suusamyr-Kokomeren cascade of hydropower plants, financed by the EDB.

In addition, ORTA ASYA Investment Holding is implementing the Suusamyr-Kokomeren and Kazarmansky hydropower cascade projects under an investment agreement with the Kyrgyz Ministry of Energy. The total investment in these projects exceeds $6 billion.

According to experts, the commissioning of the new stations will increase the installed capacity of Kyrgyzstan's power system by more than 50%, which will not only cover the growing domestic demand for electricity, but also expand its export to neighbouring countries.

The EDB was one of the first international financial organisations to support ORTA ASYA Investment Holding's energy initiatives. The Suusamyr-Kokomeren cascade of hydroelectric power plants is included in the bank's key megaproject, the Central Asia Water and Energy Complex.
