02/26/2026, 15:18The European Union is not insisting that Kyrgyzstan officially join the sanctions against Russia. This was stated by EU Special Envoy for Sanctions David O'Sullivan.
“We are not asking Kyrgyzstan to adopt our sanctions. We understand that there are countries that, for various reasons, choose a different path”, — he said.
According to the diplomat, Brussels' expectation boils down to one thing: the country's territory should not be used to circumvent European restrictions by supplying prohibited goods to Russia.
O'Sullivan stressed that the EU respects Kyrgyzstan's sovereignty and its economic ties with Russia, including labor migration and remittances, which are a significant source of income for the population.
The EU believes that preventing the transit of sanctioned goods will not lead to economic losses for Kyrgyzstan, as these are products that do not create added value within the country.
